What's Visiting Your Feeder This Week?

This week has been a mixed bag around here. The goldfinches are still working the thistle feeder in shifts, the woodpecker I wrote about a few weeks back has started bringing what I’m fairly sure is a juvenile with him — smaller, scruffier around the head, hanging back a bit while he works the suet — and there’s a mourning dove that has decided the ground under the hopper feeder is exclusively hers, to the visible annoyance of literally every other bird that lands nearby.

Nothing dramatic. No rare sightings, no first-of-the-season arrivals worth a whole post on their own. Just an ordinary week of watching, which is honestly most of what this hobby actually is — long stretches of the familiar cast, occasionally interrupted by something new enough to make you put your coffee down.

That’s sort of the point of this post, actually. I’ve been writing these as full stories — the squirrel, the goldfinches, the woodpecker — but most weeks don’t hand you a story. Most weeks are just: here’s who showed up, here’s what they did, here’s the dove being territorial again. I don’t want that to mean nothing gets shared.

So — what’s going on in your yard this week? Doesn’t need to be interesting. A regular at your feeder, something that finally showed up after weeks of nothing, a squirrel doing something you can’t quite explain. I read every comment, and I’d genuinely like to know what late summer looks like somewhere that isn’t my backyard.

I’ll try to make this a semi-regular thing — not every post, but often enough that there’s always a place to just say what you saw this week without it needing to be a whole story. Consider this the first one.
